About Enerleq

A specialist practice, led by its principal.

Founding Thesis

Enerleq was founded in 2008 to bring practical industry experience to hydrogen and fuel cell advisory, with a particular focus on Africa.

Africa’s growing energy needs and renewable resources create opportunities across the hydrogen value chain, and the continent holds much of the world’s reserves of platinum group metals, which are used as catalysts in key fuel cell and electrolyser technologies. Enerleq helps clients assess where those opportunities are commercially credible and what it takes to develop them.

The practice specialises in hydrogen, fuel cells and electrolysers, alongside the batteries, energy management and mobility systems used with them.

Dr Sakib Khan

Founder & Principal

Dr Sakib Khan is the founder of Enerleq, with close to thirty years’ experience in hydrogen and fuel cells across research, commercial development and executive leadership. He holds a PhD from the University of Surrey in computational modelling of fuel cell electrolyte materials, fully sponsored by British Gas.

Before founding Enerleq in 2008, he established and led Intelligent Energy’s South African business as Managing Director for Africa. He was part of the team behind the first stationary fuel cell deployments in Africa, providing off-grid power for healthcare, water and telecommunications. Through Enerleq, he has since held Chief Operating Officer and regional General Manager roles under consulting mandates, developing manufacturing capability and building markets for energy technologies.

He served on the working group that co-authored South Africa’s first national hydrogen and fuel cell strategy, and contributed to its successful application to join the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy. His advisory work spans manufacturers, materials producers, investors and public institutions across Africa and international markets.

How We Work

01

Intelligence before advice

Every engagement begins with rigorous market and contextual intelligence. Methods are adapted to each client's circumstances.

02

A network built over a career

Enerleq draws on a global network of associate consultants, each specialising in a part of the hydrogen value chain. They are engaged brief by brief rather than carried as staff, so a client pays for the specialism a mandate actually needs — and gains access to primary information and introductions that desk research cannot reach.

03

Context-specific outputs

A board paper, a market model, an investment memo: deliverables are built for the client's decision, audience and timeline.

04

Candour over comfort

Enerleq gives honest assessments, including those that challenge a client's assumptions. The value is in clarity, not validation.
